It Could Happen Here...
We live in an active earthquake region. In fact, BC averages approximately 1,200 earthquakes per year. Most are too small to be felt, but an earthquake capable of causing structural damage is expected to occur somewhere in the province about once every decade. There is a one in three probability that a major, damaging earthquake will occur in the next 50 years. We never know when "the big one" may happen, but we know one will occur in our area—its just a matter of time.

Local Volunteers Needed..!
In the southern Electoral Areas, the RDN has designated the Cedar Community Hall and the Cranberry Hall as emergency Reception Centers, where evacuees can go to receive short term (typically 72 hrs) assistance with basic needs. But a very critical element is missing...trained volunteers to operate the site when activated during an emergency.
When disaster strikes and a Reception Center is opened, the best possible and most invested volunteers come from right within that community. Cedar and Extension have distinct community identities and local residents who become ESS volunteers are optimal. Their familiar faces may be the ones that you see welcoming you at the door, handing you a cup of coffee, doing registration and referral for services and helping to streamline the recovery process.
How can I get involved..?
